Dorothy (Dot) Lorec Porcu Mut age 88 entered into eternal rest at Midstate Medical Hospice Care on March 2, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Derby on November 29, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Rose Lorec. Dot took great pride in her work and would often share stories of her first jobs wrapping presents at G.C. Murphy at age 14 and being “a soda jerk” at Vonetes. Her career took her to BF Goodrich, Shelton Products and Laticrete International. Of all the jobs and places, she worked, her most cherished career was her time spent at Midstate Medical Center in the Volunteer Office. Over her 17-year tenure, she made a lasting impact on the Meriden community as an advocate and volunteer. She was the proud recipient of the “Employee of the Year” distinction in 2007. Thousands of volunteers, doctors, nurses and patients were touched by her caring spirit, warm smile and dedication.
An avid UCONN basketball fan, one of Dot’s biggest dreams was to attend a Final Four game. Scheduled to attend, then Covid hit, she never was able to make it in person. However, she did fulfill that dream, virtually, in 2021 becoming one of the giant pictured faces that filled the seats that year.
To know Dot was to love her. She was spunky, sharp-witted and always ready with a joke. She had a way to light up a room and brighten the day of everyone she met. Dot traveled the world throughout her life, experiencing beautiful places and savoring all that life had to offer. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, attending sporting events, weekend or day adventures, and trips to the casino. Even as her mobility decreased, she would say “fire up the wheelchair, where are we going!” She always had time to tell those around her to “have a sparkling day.”
Our hearts are heavy to lose her, but her lively spirit will remain in our hearts forever. She was “Nan” to all her grandchildren’s friends, always lending an ear, or advice when they needed it. When you see a cardinal, watch a UCONN game, indulge in a kit-kat or dove chocolate, hopefully it will bring a smile to your face remembering our beautiful “Nanny!”
She leaves to cherish her memory a loving daughter, Mary Lou Golebieski of Naugatuck, with whom she shared a home. Her heart was full of love for her grandchildren; Kevin and Liz Golebieski of Prospect, CT and Amy and Patrick Shaughnessy of Woburn, MA. Her greatest source of happiness was her great-grandson, Ethan Golebieski of Prospect, CT. Also, many wonderful friends and family members, as well as nieces and nephews that held a special place in her heart.
Aside from her parents, Dot was predeceased by her brother John Lorec, sister Margaret (Peggy) Forte and her stepson Mickey Mut.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of Regency House in Wallingford, the doctors and nurses entrusted to her care at Midstate Medical Center Hospice Unit, and All About You homecare agency for the wonderful care she received.
